The Dominion Post claimed top honours as Newspaper of the Year Award at the recent Canon Media Awards held in Auckland.
However, the awards spread around the country with the Weekend Herald winning the prize for Best Weekly Newspaper; the North Shore Times grabbed Best Community Newspaper Award; Metro won Best Newsstand Magazine; and the Northern Advocate took at the prize for regional newspaper papers with a circulation of less than 30,000.
This year marks a 40-year milestone for the awards and saw a record 525 industry members and guests attending the event. Yusuke Mizoguchi, managing director of Canon New Zealand, says, “It is a pleasure to continue to support the industry, recognise the outstanding work that has been produced over the last year and commend the hugely talented and passionate people that form New Zealand’s media landscape.
The country’s largest newspaper, The New Zealand Herald and South Island regional daily the Timaru Herald were honoured for each achieving 150 years in publishing.
Andrea Vance, Fairfax political reporter, won Reporter of the Year and Tony Wall from Sunday Star-Times took out the Feature Writer of the Year Award. Metro’s Steve Braunias claimed the Magazine Feature Writer of the Year prize and Jane Clifton, New Zealand Listener writer, won Columnist of the Year.
Rod Emmerson from the New Zealand Herald took the Cartoonist trophy and the paper’s Richard Robinson won Press Photographer of the Year.
Digitally, Cameron Slater won best blog and stuff.co.nz won Best News Site while Yahoo NZ took the prize for Best Website overall.
