Computer skills
Administrative skills
Communication skills
Working in a team environment
Team building/Team leadership

Trainees learn and refresh their knowledge by reading through and completing activities in training workbooks. Trainees use every-day tasks they complete in the workplace as examples for the workbooks. As they progress through the training, they can apply the knowledge to help them with their work.

Trainees submit material for assessment. Once they complete the training they receive a National Certificate. The unit standards are also recorded on the trainee’s Record of Achievement with NZQA.

Never too late to learn
Susan Stapa, a trainee in the National Certificate in Business Administration and Computing, works as a customer service representative for Charta Packaging. We asked her about her studies.

New Zealand Printer: Why did you sign onto the National Certificate qualification?
Susan Stapa: This was a great opportunity, through Charta Packaging, to increase my business skills in relation to the Customer Service job I do for Charta Packaging. I have found this very beneficial and interesting to do. It is never too late to learn.
NZP: What do you hope to get out of it?
SS: “I am hoping to learn new skills and techniques to help me with my job in Customer Service.
NZP: How are you finding combining your regular work with the training?
SS: “The first assessment was easier as there was more time during work hours to complete the module. Charta is in its busy period now and the next module has been harder to work on during work hours. An arrangement has been made to allow an hour away from my desk to work on the new assessment and this will be a help as I can give the tasks my full attention without interruptions.”
NZP: What do you expect from the certificate?
SS: I am looking forward to working through the modules and learning how I can relate the skills into my work. I think everyone in the work place can benefit from this training especially if they have to deal with customers and other people in their workplace. The support from Julie at PrintNZ, and my manager, Marquerite, has been great and encouraging.

Trainees complete workbooks on each core skill, using their experiences in the workplace as examples in the workbooks. Trainees also complete their choice of electives as part of this qualification.
As they progress through the training they can begin to apply the knowledge in the workplace.

Improving sales
Glenn Leenderts, a trainee in the National certificate for Sales qualification, works as a sales manager for NZ Print. He agreed to answer some questions about his studies
New Zealand Printer: Why did you sign onto the National Certificate qualification?
Glenn Lendeerts: I have worked in sales since leaving school, initially as a rep for Crown Forklifts for five years. I took on a sales role in the print industry more than 10 years ago not knowing anything about the industry. I really enjoy my job – taking a job a customer has spent hours on and making it happen. I want to learn more – and put a qualification behind me.
NZP: What do you hope to get out of it?
GL: I want to self-improve. This qualification will help me to improve my selling and writing skills and also to think outside the square.
NZP: How are you finding combining your regular work with the training?
GL: It has been easy so far, having done the job for so long. I expect it to get harder as I work through the next modules though.
NZP: How do you believe the certificate will help you?
GL: My long term goal is to help run the business with Mark (the business owner) and build on the growth we have already achieved. This qualification will help me to achieve my goal.
