CPI  appointments
The CPI Group is holding a seminar in Sydney this month to inform printers and print finishers about the revolution which is occurring in bookbinding. It will be held at CPI’s premises at 74-94 Newtown Road, Wetherill Park, at 1.30 – 4.00pm on Wednesday September 17. Guest speakers will be Dieter Ehlermann, managing director Wohlenberg Consulting in Germany, and Dr Achim Hubener, general manager of Henkel Adhesives in Australia. They will inform guests about the latest world developments in automated set-up for perfect binders, and the dramatic impact which PUR glue technology is set have in Australia.

Australian Debut for New Wohlenberg Quickbinder
The Quickbinder will be sporting the new Navigator interactive user interface. Guests will see how the automated set-up is simply initiated by entering the book dimensions on the touch screen. The same system is also used on Wohlenberg high speed binding lines and the 75i three knife trimmer.

Flexibility is paramount on the Quickbinder and it will handle books from tabloid down CD size, and from 70mm down to 2mm thick. It features wheel in/wheel-out glue tanks, and at the seminar will be demonstrating PUR binding.

A powerful 5.5 kW spine milling unit combined with the exclusive Wohlenberg multiple knife head ensures perfect spine preparation.

The rotary cover feeder has a large capacity to reduce the frequency required for topping up, and easily handles single and double gatefold covers.

PUR Glue Technology set to Revolutionise Book-binding
PUR is an abbreviation for polyurethane and is glue that provides a unique bonding system for perfect binding. Wohlenberg did a lot of the early research into PUR and has now installed over 100 lines world-wide with this capability.

The installation by Trio Bookbinders in Melbourne of a new Wohlenberg Master 7000, is the first perfect binding line in Australia with PUR capability, and marks the introduction of this technology to our industry.

The Wohlenberg lines are supplied with wheel-in/wheel-out glue tanks so that operators can switch between conventional hot melt glue and PUR from job to job depending on which is the most appropriate.

Some of the key benefits of PUR versus conventional hot melt are :-
Considerably higher bonding strength. It is virtually impossible to pull out a page of a PUR-bound book. PUR can also bind UV coated, and heavier stocks equally well, which are impossible using normal hot melt. PUR glue undergoes a molecular change when cooling after application, which cannot be reversed. This means the binding is permanent and unaffected by extreme high temperatures or humidity. Conventional hot melt glue can "re-melt" in this situation, and pages become loose.

Flexibility of spine. PUR glues provide a flexible spine which does not crack when the book is opened out, and is unaffected by high or low extremes of temperature.

Recycle friendly. PUR glue can be 100% removed from pulp, as it is unaffected by the repulping process and is therefore easily separated.

PUR to Replace the Majority of Section Sewing
Due to the outstanding binding characteristics of PUR glue, it has replaced a substantial part of work which was previously section sewn in a number of overseas countries.

It offers cost savings and far faster turn-around. It also makes burst binding unnecessary. Trio Bookbinders have received enormous interest in their PUR binding service, and it is surely inevitable that it will revolutionise bookbinding in this country.
