DES and EFI came together last week at the Australian Technology Park in Sydney to present the first public glimpse of the new EFI Colorproof XF software in an event compered by industry icon Andy McCourt. The product represents a total re-write of the German Bestcolor Proofing software, which EFI acquired in July 2003. EFI Colorproof XF addresses the needs of today’s graphic professionals, which include publishers, printers, packagers, photographers, designers, ad agencies and anyone involved in producing high-fidelity still colour reproduction, who are increasingly part of an IT-based workflow environment.

Present at the showing were Ian Clare, DES managing director; Russell Cavenagh, DES sales director and colour expert; Bernard Sun, EFI Asia Pacific sales development manager, and several of DES’s partner suppliers and customers.

Clare says, "DES introduced the first accurate colour managed workflow in 1999 when we were appointed the ANZ distributor for Bestcolor GmbH. Since then, over 38,000 copies have been installed worldwide and ‘ordinary’ inkjet and laser printers have been able to produce photographic-quality results and contract proofs of publications which are so critical in the magazine and catalogue business."

XF will be commercially available from November 1. Clients who have purchased EFI/Best Colorproof software since May 6 this year will receive a free cross-grade to Colorproof XF after then.

Cavenagh says, "Colorproof XF’s ease of us, flexibility, modularity and functionality make it really stand out. I’ve been dealing with critical colour for publication and packaging for over 20 years and have never seen a more impressive proofing product. XF drives inexpensive printers from Epson, Canon, Roland and others and delivers colour precision equal or better to ‘high end’ systems costing over a hundred thousand dollars or more. It resides on a central server where, once profiled, it can be accessed by lesser experienced ‘clients’ on the network to produce colour prints and proofs of the highest possible accuracy.

"The modular build and Mac-PC cross platform operability is best of all. EFI Colorproof XF can be configured for one user up to hundreds of users. From basic RGB photographic colour requirements, say for portraiture, weddings and commercial photography; right up to contract proofs used to sign off million-dollar magazine print orders, EFI Colorproof XF has a module to suit. Customers buy only what they need, when they need it and can add to it as their business grows."
