Two Australian students strike gold in Agfa’s 2002 Graphic Arts Contest
Young graphic arts students Sarah Birks from Ballarat University in Victoria and Andew Koch from Southbank TAFE in Queensland have been awarded Gold awards in Agfa’s 2002 Graphic Arts Contest.
Birks and Koch are two of only 10 Gold and four Platinum award recipients chosen from over 1000 student entries worldwide and have continued the tradition for both campuses in their success in the competition, now in its sixth year.
Students were asked to design a folding box, a tin can label and a round sticker for a promotional watch giveaway, fitting in with the theme “The Time of Your Life”, the templates of which were supplied by Agfa.
Koch was inspired by times he spent travelling with is father, incorporating images of roads, windmills and petrol bowsers into his design.
“I went on a trip to Adelaide with Dad about 10 years ago, driving all the way. We went through a few towns and along a lot of desert roads.”
Birks, on the other hand, recollected times spent as a young child with her grandmother in choosing her design.
“Nana used to take me and my brothers and sisters shopping. As a treat, she would buy us each a ‘jelly-in-a-cup’ and when we got home we would sit in front of the TV and watch cartoons or colour-in while we ate our jellies,” says Birks.
“I always had fond memories of that and, as the contest asked for a unique ‘time’, I thought it was appropriate.”
Both Birks and Koch, who entered the contest as part of their course assessment, will receive sample of their designed packages as well as a high-quality publication on graphic arts and design.
