Australian Graphic Servicing has been named as a finalist in the savewater awards in the ‘Retail and Service Provider’ category for outstanding achievement in water conservation. It is joined by Visy Paper, along with a host of other Victoria-based businesses as fellow finalists. Rob Gell, awards judging panel chair, says, "The savewater awards were established to recognise and reward innovation and achievement in water conservation from Victorian businesses, schools, community groups, government departments and agencies, and individuals.

"The response from the community to the call to conserve our precious water supply is encouraging. Businesses are increasingly making a commitment to the broader areas of environmental sustainability and social responsibility."

For more than 10 years, Australian graphic Servicing, based in Mulgrave, has provided technical support to the flexographic, label and commercial printing industries across Australia.

This support now extends to helping conserve water during printing, through the design of a Water Saver circuit that times water requirements on prepress equipment. Average water saving results are 40-60 per cent, with some companies reporting over 100,000 litres of saved water per month.

Rene Wendt, Australian graphics Servicing business development manager, says, "When a printing plate enters the processor, wash water can come on 40 seconds before required and may run two minutes longer than needed. At one site, three million litres of water was being wasted each year.

"So to meet a customer’s request to help reduce the water usage of their prepress equipment, we designed a programmable controller to monitor and control water flow and duration times."

The savewater awards include 13 categories, including Water Conservation for Manufacturing, Agribusiness, Retail and Service Providers, Education Facilities, Plant Wholesalers and Retailers, Community Groups, and Government Organisations. A special Award of Excellence will acknowledge the organisation that is judged to have made the greatest contribution to water conservation.

The winners will be announced at a gala dinner on May 21, 2004.
