German Minister for Economy and Labour, Wolfgang Clement, opened drupa 2004 at Düsseldorf’s Congress Center yesterday. Addressing more than 500 invited business and political leaders, Clement says: "In Germany, we can only increase our productivity and competitiveness on a long-term basis through innovation".

And innovation is what drupa, the greatest show in print is all about. Suppliers to the industry are pinning their hopes on the gradual improvement in the global economy, which traditionally drives demand for printed material.

drupa President and CEO of Koenig & Bauer AG, Albrecht Bolza-Schünemann, was also upbeat that drupa 2004 will continue to exhibit signs of that upward swing.

Heidelberg is expecting EU 1 bn in sales to come out of the event, and yesterday announced a major web press sale to Poland.
