The 13th annual Australian Catalogue Awards were recently held in the Grand Ballroom of Melbourne’s Sofitel Hotel, with Independent Print Media Group (IPMG) coming out on top with a grand total of ten awards. Hannanprint NSW took out top honours, winning the coveted Catalogue of the Year – Over 1.5 Million Catalogues prize for its Freedom "Staying In Winter 2004" catalogue. Hannanprint adds this accolade to an impressive list that includes Magazine of the Year, which it received at the MPA Awards for its Delicious magazine; and Community Newspaper of the Year – Over 50,000 copies, which it received for The Wentworth Courier at the CAN Awards.

In total, Hannaprint NSW won four Australian Catalogue Awards, as did Offset Alpine Printing, while Craft Printing was recognised with two awards.

Chris Lee Brown, Australian Catalogue Association CEO, says that the winners of this year’s awards were an example of some of the finest examples of the commercial use of layout, art style, form, colour, and functional effectiveness.

"Commercial effectiveness is the true litmus test of a successful catalogue and the continuing growth of catalogue advertising as a medium is certain proof that they do work," he says.

Success in this field is becoming increasingly important. Catalogue marketing by non-traditional users has increased by 6.2 per cent since the awards began in 1992, and a recent survey of 1200 household shoppers reveals 74 per cent of people visit stores as a direct result of catalogues. Catalogue expenditure has also grown significantly in recent times.

The list of awards taken out by IPMG include: Catalogue of the Year – Over 1.5 Million Catalogues; Retailers – Chain Stores General – Over 1.5 Million Catalogues; Retailers – Chain Stores – Special Events or Themes – Over 1.5 Million Catalogues; Retailers – Shopping Centres; Fashion – Women’s, Men’s and Children’s Apparel; Fashion – Personal; Catalogue Innovation – Direct Mail – Business to Consumer; Catalogue Innovation – Direct Mail – Business to Business; Home Interiors - Over 1.5 Million Catalogues; and Craft – Photography and Illustration.
