Kodak Polychrome Graphics has earned the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise for its development of the Electra Excel thermal printing plate. The award was presented by The Duke of Kent, at Kodak Polychrome Graphics’ Leeds factory, on Monday November 24 2003. "We are extremely honoured to receive such recognition for our work in product innovation," says Terry Baber, Kodak Polychrome Graphics UK managing director."The award illustrates Kodak Polychrome Graphics’ dedication to product development and outlines the company’s determination to maintain its leading position in the manufacture and supply of thermal plates to the print industry. The technology behind Electra Excel helps Kodak Polychrome Graphics sell more thermal plates internationally than any other company in the world."
During the award ceremony, The Duke of Kent learnt how Electra Excel was developed over a four year period - transforming the Leeds factory, which employs over 300 people, from a conventional platemaking site to a manufacturing plant that is solely dedicated to producing digital printing plates.
Steve Doyle, worldwide technical director for plates, accepted the award on behalf of the company and says: "Electra Excel thermal plates provide significant benefits to the industry because printers can achieve supreme printing quality. This third generation plate demonstrates Kodak Polychrome Graphics‘ continuing drive to offer ’best in class’ products for customers.
"The success of the plate lies mainly with the make up and application of the coating, which has been developed to enhance handling, speed and quality. The plates provide superior resolution of 1-99 percent halftone dots at 250lpi as well as a broader spectral sensitivity. Designed to meet the needs of the commercial sheet-fed printer, the plates produce quality results in a variety of sizes, for short and medium run lengths," says Doyle.
The Queen’s Award honours and supports UK based industry and applications are thoroughly assessed and judged by three separate panels, covering International Trade, Innovation and Sustainable Development before being short-listed and finalised by the Advisory Committee.
