Voting closed at the end of June for the inaugural Label Industry Global Awards after which the judging panel, chaired by veteran industry analyst, Mike Fairley, met in Chicago on July 15 to review an extensive list of nominations for each of the three awards. Three global supply companies, each of whom have made significant contributions to the global growth and development of the label industry, were nominated for the Label Industry Award for Continuous Innovation sponsored by Labels & Labelling, Label & Narrow Web and NarroWebTech magazines: Avery Dennison, Esko-Graphics and Nilpeter.

The Label Industry Award for New Innovation sponsored by HP and Creo highlights the innovative and creative solutions now being pioneered for the future development of the label market. The final short list of companies in this category are AVT, Gidue and HP Indigo.

The winners of The Label Industry Award for Continuous Innovation and The Label Industry Award for New Innovation will be announced at the Gala Awards dinner and ceremony, taking place at the Donald E Stevens Convention Center, Rosemont, Chicago, on September 13, on the first evening of Labelexpo Americas 2004.

Meanwhile, the most prestigious of the awards, the R. Stanton Avery Lifetime Achievement Award, sponsored by Avery Dennison, proved to be the most challenging. A long list of nominees from the converting and supply industry highlighted the number of people who have made a significant contribution to the global growth of the labels sector.

Many of the nominees have spent their whole life in the label sector, active in developing their own business and the industry – both on a national and a global basis – and have made key contributions to associations and to education and training.

It was eventually agreed by a unanimous decision of the Judging Panel that in 2004 the winner of the R. Stanton Avery Lifetime Achievement Award is Dale Bunnell, who spent 20 years as vice president, sales & marketing, at Mark Andy and a further five years as vice president, business development, within the company.

During his time at Mark Andy, Bunnell was instrumental in the company’s worldwide revenue growth from US$5m to an estimated $80m annually. Throughout his time with the company, he participated in industry associations and was a regular speaker at industry conferences and in key label industry activities. He spent time as a board member of the TLMI, was an active member of the Flexographic Technical Association, and a founding member of the World Label Association.
