The Major Mail Users Association (MMUA) closed the doors yesterday on its 2003 trade show, claiming that the event was a complete success. Held at the Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, the event showcased the best and latest in mailing technologies in what is a growing and diversifying market.

Throughout the event, various seminars were held to allow visitors to take a deeper look at the trends and technologies that are shaping the mailing and fulfilment industry.

A strong message voiced by such proponents as Scitex Digital Printing, Océ and Fuji Xerox Australia is that of personalisation. Stephen Pratt, Scitex Digital Printing regional marketing manager held a discussion on how colour and personalisation can be combined to overcome dwindling responses to traditional mail-based marketing campaigns. Scitex Digital Printing is currently marketing its VersaMark digital printing press, which is being aimed at companies seeking to make new inroads into direct marketing. Other keynote speakers included former Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating; Philip Hadcroft, HPA general manager for strategy and marketing; Michael Erhart, Océ marketing directo for the mailing industry; and Gary Lee, Australia Post general manager for letters.

Scitex Digital Printing took the opportunity to give Australian customers their first glimpse of its Dijit Passport 4300 system for high speed, digital black and white personalisation of mailing and marketing products.

Océ took the opportunity to batter acquaint the industry with its CPS700 digital colour press, and show how this solution can be used to produce personalised colour documentation for mailing and direct marketing purposes.

Océ also demonstrated its ability to print newspaper publications from anywhere in the world on the day of publication by means of one of its monochrome printers and its software solutions.

The show also marked a new foray into the mailing market for Fuji Xerox Australia, which launched its new fleet of continuous feed digital printers onto the Australian market after successful rollouts across Europe.

Apart from the printing side of the industry, inTelmail, Pitney Bowes, GBC and Advanced Machine Technologies were on hand to display their range of folding/inserting lines. A stand out for the show was Australian Paper’s stand, which was explaining its new ’Remail’ philosophy of recycling, with demonstrators on stand producing recycled papers and envelopes by hand from recycled pulp. This proved to be an interesting hands-on experience for many visitors.
