PMP Print received its second major award in 2003 for their staff development and training initiatives, which have assisted with the significant increases in production output and improved efficiencies experienced across all areas of the business. The most recent award is the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) ‘Industry Award’ for the IT and Telecommunications industry which includes the Printing and Graphic Arts sector.PMP’s Training and Development Manager-Moorebank, Wayne McDougall was presented with the award at Jupiters Casino on the Gold Coast in November, 2003 in front of an audience of the most successful trainers in Australia.
"The award is great recognition for our efforts and the company’s commitment to developing and training staff’ says McDougall. Earlier last year PMP Moorebank was also awarded the ‘Employer of the year’ in the Training and Development category at the Western Sydney Business Awards.
PMP’s Moorebank training department was implemented in April, 2001 and now consists of seven full time staff who work closely with TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute to deliver on-site training in line with the National Printing and Graphic Arts training Package.
Training is delivered during working hours and usually on a one to one basis, with machine specific training plans and job rotation as key elements. TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute back up the training with quality assurance and some short TAFE modules delivered on PMP premises.
The Institute and PMP Moorebank operate under a partnership arrangement, which according to Alan Stott, Client Support Consultant from TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute is a long-term dream come true. "We have discussed this scenario, where companies take a serious approach to in-house training and formalise the process through TAFE for a long time and now we have the proof that partnerships in training do work".
The original training goals were to:
Train and develop non qualified employees
Up skill existing workers and recognize existing skills with qualifications
Develop a safety culture through OH&S and Environmental management programs
Develop structured succession planning and employee development
Since introducing its training department and in conjunction with the Performance Improvement Program, PMP Print Moorebank has achieved continued improvement in production and efficiencies resulting in the site performing at its best levels.
Paper wastage is down significantly, as well as other Key Performance Indicators showing sustainable improvements.
The Training department will continue to add value to PMP Print Moorebank over the coming year with projects including:
- Implementing tailored training programs to support the commissioning of new equipment.
- Continuing the skill recognition and development of non-trade qualified employees towards achieving national qualifications in Certificate 2- Print Production Support.
- Further developing the HR function by supporting structured performance management processes to department management and supervision.
- Further develop the management skills of department supervision towards achieving national qualifications at Certificate 4 and diploma levels in Frontline Management.
By utilising the internal training structures the business has had the opportunity to develop its people and systems in ways never experienced before in the web printing industry. With its current track record and continued widening scope, the training department at PMP Print, Moorebank will continue to play an integral part in the company and Printing industries future growth.
