The cone of silence between John Fairfax Holdings Limited and West Australian Newspapers Holdings Limited has been lifted, after speculation in recent months that the two publishing companies were deep in merge talks. Ian Law, managing director of West Australian Newspapers Holdings Limited, has confirmed that discussions had taken place with John Fairfax Holdings Limited.

Law made the announcement following rumours about the discussions between the two companies, wanting to clear the air over reports the companies were close to announcing a deal.

"Analysis of the potential benefits of a merger with John Fairfax Holdings Limited has been done several times over the years. Recent discussions have been inconclusive and there should be no presumption that further discussions will take place," says Law.
