Massey University’s Palmerston North based printing department has won the top digital award at the inaugural NIPPA  Awards ceremony at their annual conference recently held in Sydney, taking home the gold for the highest scoring submission over seven categories.

University Printery Manager, Rob Roberts - co-incidentally the New Zealand branch president of NIPPA (Network of In-House Print Professionals Australasia) - says he's thrilled to bring home the two awards, having been one of only two New Zealand institutions recognised, the other being Unitec who received 'The Best in Category Award' for their submission in the wide format category .

Rob Roberts accepted the award on behalf of his staff, saying "The awards not only recognise the high level of quality produced by the in-house sector of the printing industry, but also demonstrate what can be achieved by a motivated team".

The Printery won the Best in Category (Digital Print) Award, and also the Gold Award, which was presented to the highest scoring submission over a range of seven categories.

The award was for a Christmas card which was produced for Massey University Printery customers for Christmas 2006, the image on the card was printed in black and embellished with embossing and die-cutting.

Rob Roberts added "The card was designed, printed, die cut and embossed in-house. The awards criteria stipulate that all entries have to be completed this way to be eligible,"

The Massey University Printery operates a wide range of digital printers, a well equipped bindery and an offset section which includes a single colour GTO, a Ryobi 520 and a Ryobi 3400 DI.

"As an association we decided we would run our own awards programme to recognise the high level of quality produced by the In-House Sector of the printing industry. The programme includes production awards for both Digital and Offset, an award for Outstanding Contribution to NIPPA and a Business of the Year award, the programme was set up last year to be run at our annual conference in Sydney this year which was attended by more than 100 members."

Established in 1993, NIPPA has 35 members in New Zealand and includes institutions such as Otago, Canterbury, Massey and Waikato Universities, Unitec, AUT and a number of local government printing departments ranging in size from two-man operations to full businesses. Australia has approximately 100 members.

The 2008 NIPPA Conference will be hosted by the New Zealand branch. It is planned for October with the venue being Rotorua.
