Packaging giant Visy has established a new position of director of sustainability, which the company claims will enhance its current positions on recycling and environmental management.

Visy says its group public affairs manager, Tony Gray, will assume the new role and lead Visy's continued drive to make sustainability a key component in its offering to customers and the wider community.

Grey will also continue to perform his existing roles of Visy's group public affairs manager and assistant to the Chairman.

A company statement says the position was created in recognition of the increasingly important role that sustainability is playing in Visy's business operations.

Visy continues, "The appointment reflects Visy's intent to consolidate its current positions into a holistic strategy and action plan and to remain its global leadership position in sustainable business practices."

Commenting on the appointment, Visy CEO, John Murphy says, "Visy plays a significant leadership role with its customers and the broader community on a broad range of environmental and social issues, ranging from global warming to packaging covenant requirements."

Tony Gray now has director-level responsibility for Visy's activities across:

  • Government relations, public affairs and media liaison;
  • Environmental management systems, policies and reputation;
  • Community relations; and
  • Public reporting.

Murphy concludes, "Tony's appointment reflects our desire to continue to grow our leadership and support for customers, the community and the environment while ensuring we remain a world-leader in sustainable business practices."
