Icecream and wine deliver Aussie World Label wins

Australian labellers have taken out three joint best-in-class wins at the L9 World Label Awards for 2013, their talent for the finer things in life clearly shining through in print.

Multi-Color Queensland is celebrating its win in the flexo colour process category for a Ministry of Icecream label, a boutique organic mango sorbet bedecked with illustrations of a vintage map and explorer.

Alex Forster, prepress manager with Multi-Color Queensland, says the label was printed using HD Flexo printing plates at 200 lines per inch screen ruling.

He tells Australian Printer, “This latest technology gave us smoother vignettes, sharp detail, intense colours and high contrast. The result was a label quality equal to that usually seen in gravure and offset printing.

“We advised the customer to use a matt laminate to give the label a finish that complemented the design.”

This is not Multi-Color’s first successful rodeo; in 2012 it scored top honours in the flexo colour class for its Lite n’ Easy Roast Chicken Linguine label, and in the booklets category for a Win An Apple iPad brochure.

Malcolm Penn, general manager of Multi-Color Queensland, says passion is a big part of the labeller’s success. He tells Australian Printer, “We run a really nice shop here. We are trying to increase our hall of fame and focus on quality and innovation. It takes time. We had six entries this year, we are happy to win one, and we had two wins the year before – so the consistency is there.”

Also flying the flag for Oz this year in the combination wine and spirits category is NSW outfit Collotype Labels Griffith, for its Wahgunyah shiraz label on behalf of St Leonards winery. Collotype, which specialises in wine label printing, has a keen taste for embellishment; the Wahgunyah label shines with golden touches.

Doubling down the Australian wine win is digital-only firm Ultra Labels Australia – coming out tops in the digital printing wine and spirits class, for Ocean View Estate’s 2012 Luscious Harvest, with quirky modern illustration.
