The 24th National Print Awards will be held in Sydney from the May 24 to 26 of May next year in conjunction with Printex 07 and organisers have launched their call for entries. Planning ahead is a key ingredient of increasing your chances for success. Conferring with printers around Australia, the National Print Awards organisation asks, "How do you handpick a project for submission in the Awards?" and "How do you select the jobs that you believe will attract the eyes of the Judging Panel?"Printers do not necessarily have to target any particular projects as entries in the Awards. But nor should they leave it until the last moment and make a rushed selection.
Chairman of the National Print Awards, Scott Telfer, says that while the Call for Entries will not be closing until mid-February 2007, it has been shown that companies that prepare early have a generally higher chance of winning a medal.
At Gold-medal-winning printing compan,y MacDonald & Masterson of Sydney, projects are not earmarked for inclusion at the outset, but are selected on their quality after they are completed, says Peter Bounas, one of the directors.
Meanwhile, at Scott Print in Perth, jobs are not targeted but are carefully assessed before submission, says general manager Andrew Neale. "I place myself in the position of being a judge on the panel and ask myself what I would be looking for in a Gold-winning submission," Neale remarks.
Whatever selection method is used, it must be working. The judges of the 23rd Awards commented on the extremely high quality of the entries this year, and the Board is looking forward to receiving entries of a similar calibre.
Scott Telfer also comments on the high standard of print being achieved at the state level. Telfer has been the guest of the state PICA awards in Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia.
"These awards are a great starting point for the National Print Awards," says Telfer. "The high quality of print across Australia is a testimonial to our industry."
Telfer also pays tribute to the many hours the various PICA boards put into making them a great success. "Without these committees at a state level, the National Print Awards would not be the success they are," he adds.
Gold medallists in the 24th National Print Awards will also be considered for the Heidelberg Award for Excellence in Craft.
All medal winners will be featured in the prestigious National Print Awards record book and will be part of the National Print Awards website.
Medallists will have their work displayed for the duration of Printex 07, with medals and awards announced at the dinner presentation on Friday, May 25.
Kudos from being a medal-winning business goes a long way, as Sydney’s Peachy Print attests. Bruce Cameron, one of Peachy’s three partners, says that since its success at the National Print Awards, this premium print house has found that industry talk has become its strongest marketing tool.
Entries must be submitted to National Print Awards, Unit 3, 5-7 Compark Circuit, Mulgrave, VicC 3170. Any project completed in the period January 1 - December 31, 2006, is eligible.
