Recognising the contribution of innovative Melbourne print and graphic communications group, D&D Global and its high profile owner, Drago Zorec, Victorian Manufacturing and Export Minister, Tim Holding, toured the company’s Richmond premises earlier today. PMG publisher, Anders Öqvist was there. “Companies like D&D Global are driving the future of Victorian business through innovation and global competitiveness”, says Holding.D&D has earned five Benny Awards (so named because they are in the likeness of Benjamin Franklin who was one of America’s first printers). The Bennys are awarded to printers worldwide who are deemed to have reached the pinnacle of print quality: among other achievements, D&D’s Benny awards recognise its groundbreaking MCP colour reproduction system and its leading work practices. D&D’s innovative new technology employs a combination of up to 12 colours to achieve extremely detailed images and has become something of a global benchmark in print quality.
Holding told invited guests that companies like D&D are setting an excellent example for other Victorian manufacturers, of what can be achieved with their willingness to invest in world best practices. To this end the Victorian Government has introduced The Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame to both honour and showcase examples of companies which have made a sustained contribution to manufacturing excellence over the past five years.
The Victorian Government has invested $27m in its Agenda for New Manufacturing strategy, which delivers a range of programmes to boost both innovation and productivity. A further $900m investment in science and technology by the Bracks government has yielded benefits for the print and graphic communications industry with initiatives such as the National Printing Laboratory and the CRC for Functional Communication Surfaces.
“To help more world-beating Victorian companies like D&D break into international markets, we are delivering the $11m Opening Doors to Export plan which includes programmes like the 11 statewide Export Networks I launched last week”, says Holding.
In welcoming the minister and responding to his comments, D&D managing director, Drago F. Zorec acknowledges the recognition the company’s MCP technology has achieved and says that several business opportunities are under discussion particularly in the United States and China.
D&D Global was founded in 1977 and employs 50 people. It provides imaging, design and printing services for major brand owners, among them BMW, Adidas, Lexus and Oroton.
The Victorian print industry employs over 28,000 skilled workers and generates annual turnover of $5bn.
