Carter Holt Harvey (CHH) has achieved what it deems to be a milestone in workplace safety with all of its 12 Victorian manufacturing and office sites having gained WorkSafe Victoria’s Safety Management Achievement Program (SafetyMAP) accreditation. SafetyMAP is an audit tool developed by WorkSafe Victoria that provides an external review of an organisations’ health and safety management systems.Ian Unwin, CHH COO, says, "We are proud to be leading the way in workplace safety. We’ve worked hard at developing a strong culture of health and safety and this proves the level of commitment from employees at all levels of the organisation."
One of the keys to CHH success in developing a strong safety culture was the introduction of its Key Element Assessment (KEA) programme, an internal safety audit similar to SafetyMAP, but performed by representatives of other CHH facilities.
"The KEA programme allows us to share knowledge and experience across our businesses to ensure the highest levels of workplace safety," says Unwin.
CHH has achieved a 90 per cent reduction in workplace injuries over the last nine years and is now working towards a zero incident rate by December 2004.
"The active participation and commitment of all of our employees in the KEA and SafetyMAP initiatives will help us remain focused on achieving our goal of a zero injury rate across the company," says Unwin. "Everyone should be able to go home to families safe from harm."
