After 20 years in Auckland’s print finishing business, Alvin Hartshorne has set herself up as a print finishing broker for the printing industry under JSB Print Finishers Ltd, a niche she says that no-one else is filling. Alvin was the director of a large Auckland print finishing company which was sold earlier this year, and after a well-deserved nine month break, she is ready to step back into business. With her inside knowledge of print finishing, she says she is well placed to provide a seamless service to printers who are facing increasingly tight deadlines.
Not only is she able to gather quotes for their work, but she will organise delivery to print finishers and delivery of the end product to the printers’ clients if necessary.
She believes the two most important things within the industry which are often lacking are service and communication.
She says she will guarantee to tell printers exactly when their job will be completed, and when it will be delivered.
"If there’s a problem and there’s going to be a delay, I will tell them," she says.
In two of the jobs she’s done so far, she’s not only managed to get them out a day early, but she’s also pitched in and helped in the finishing process.
While she is not embarking on a price war, Alvin says she has one piece of advice: "If quality is the issue, don’t expect a cheap price. If you want a cheap price, then don’t expect the same quality."
