Founded in 1916, Scots College is an independent boys’ school located in Wellington that comprises both a Preparatory and a Secondary School. It recently purchased two Phaser 8200 printers, one for each of the schools. Scots College’s 600 students and 50 staff print report covers, artwork with photos and graphic elements, handouts, and website printouts on a regular basis. They therefore needed high-performance colour printers to meet their demand and keep costs down."Initially we needed a replacement for our network printer and wanted something colour capable," says Sue Esterman, Information Centre Director for Scots College. "We asked OEM Print Solutions to provide recommendations that met our requirements and one of the printers they presented was the Phaser 8200."
"We were spending a lot on consumables such as ink cartridges and paper," Esterman says. "We selected the Phaser 8200 solid ink printer because it was easy to use. The default settings for black and white printing and double-sided printing allow us to avoid paper waste, a major problem in a school. We very soon realised that both schools could benefit greatly from another of these printers."
A Phaser 8200 is now located in the Information Centre of each school, which includes a library and computer facilities for students. The secondary school centre is staffed by two professional librarians, a computer systems manager and a team of 22 student librarians/computer whizzes, and the Centre is always buzzing with activity. The printer’s ease of use means that Centre staff can easily drop the lightweight colour ink blocks into the designated slots, replacing only the colours used most often.
"The printers get used all the time. The students think they’re great," Esterman says "especially those in the secondary school because they didn’t have access to a colour printer previously.
"The students are very creative and have had excellent results printing assignments containing art and graphics. The outputs look fantastic, even when using inexpensive or recycled paper," Sue continued.
"The addition of the two networked Phaser 8200 units has enabled us to significantly reduce the total number of printers, allowing easier management and a reduction in print costs."
The Phaser 8200’s unique solid ink technology is one of its key attributes, and led to its recognition for environmental performance by the Australian Environmental Labelling Association.
"We were told about the solid ink technology and that the ink was non-toxic," Esterman says. "Whilst cost savings was the primary driver in our purchase decision, the fact that it had received environmental recognition was a nice bonus."
