Bill Healey, CEO of Printing Industries met with Geon’s receivers on Friday. He says, “Geon’s current position has serious ramifications for the entire industry, and is causing for grave concern amongst its former suppliers, which includes many of our members.”
“In the current climate any collapse of Geon will cause serious difficulties to many printers and other suppliers, impacting on their viability. Printing Industries will be working hard to ensure the best outcome for the rest of the printing industry.”
Healey says that while he completely understands the anger in the industry the PIAA won’t be calling for a boycott of suppliers who work with a new incarnation of Geon, as this would leave it open to prosecution under the Trades Practices Act, however he says, “Individual companies can make their own choices.”
The industry’s peak association is in touch with the federal minister for industry Greg Combet over Geon, asking him to intervene as 1200 jobs are on the line.
Healey contacted Combet’s office on Friday, and Combet’s department then asked for a further briefing, which Healey prepared over the weekend. Healey says, “Given the size and importance of Geon to the printing industry, and the ramifications of any collapse we felt it warranted ministerial attention.”
Healey is unsure if the department will become involved.
