The 2006 Western Australia Printing Industries Craftmanship Awards (PICAs) have been held, at the Burswood International Resort Casino Grand Ballroom two in Perth, attracting a record crowd of 473 people for the presentation dinner. The Printing Industries Craftsmanship Awards, known as the PICA’s, celebrate excellence in the print, packaging, and visual communication industry in Western Australia, and recognise the special efforts of printers by awarding their best work.
The Awards have proven to be vital in lifting the standard of Australia’s best work to its present level and for attaining recognition internationally for the skills of Australia’s Graphic Arts specialists.
This year’s event saw 372 entries from 50 companies and a total of 36 Gold, 39 Silver and 36 Bronze awards presented to outstanding performers across the PICAs nominated companies.

Fellow Western Australian printers Prism Graphics, Pilpel Print and Advance Press claimed 3 Golds each and Fast Finishing Services scored 2 Golds for their professional print finishing services.
Surrounded by the rainforest theme, guests listened to an informative speech by President of Printing Industries, Graham Pittway. Pittway emphasised sustainability in the printing industry and encouraged participation in programs such as Green Stamp.
Other speakers were national president of Printing Industries, Peter Lane who spoke briefly on the necessity for adding greater value for the customer and not standing still in the face of changing industry conditions. Chris Ager from Paperlinx discussed the importance to the industry of printers having a socially and environmentally responsible agenda.
Winner of the Printing Industry Recognition Award for 2006 was Richard Pilpel of Pilpel Print who received a standing ovation from the crowd after his introduction from PICA chairman Des Williamson.
“It was well earned and appropriate award for a man who has shown such dedication to the printing industry,” says Williamson.
New winners were Shern Nguyen from S & T Graphic Design, as well as, Colour Print, and both companies were delighted to receive their individual awards.
The LIA award for the Apprentice of the Year went to William Hammond, an apprentice at Plastafab.
