Tim Robb, general manager for marketing and innovation, Spectra Training told Australian Printer, “Print courses are mostly conducted in the client’s workplace with a Spectra print trainer and assessor coming onsite. For some theory sessions, an office or a private area at the workplace would be used, whereas the practical application of the skills and assessment is done on the factory floor. For some training sessions, it may be more beneficial for the apprentices work with a number of apprentices in a workshop type setting or operate different machinery. With industry support, Spectra Training provides and facilitates this type of flexibility and brings the apprentices together for some subjects.”
Trever Thomas Spectra’s Lead Pre- Press Trainer, says, "Our courses have a strong focus on colour management. As our industry increases attention on automated workflows, higher skills in colour management knowledge will allow operators to develop and manage a strong workflow."
Gary Cobbledick, CEO, Spectra Training says, "This course has been developed following consultation with printing industry representatives. With print training staff across Australia, Spectra Training has proactively started to address gaps in training for the printing industry".
Spectra says the Pre-press qualification now consolidates Spectra Training's Certificate III in Printing and Print Finishing Apprenticeship courses. Spectra Training's print trainers specialise in lithography, flexography, gravure, heat-set and cold-set web, wide format and flat-bed digital, as well as general commercial, labels and packaging.
Spectra is the new name for what was CLB Training and Development. CEO Cobbledick says, “We believed it was time to refresh our branding in light of many of the major changes in our business over the past few years.”
He says, “We chose the name Spectra because we deliver training and consultancy services across a wide spectrum of industries and subject areas. The word evokes a breadth of range, as well as order, structure and colour, especially if you think of the spectrum of colour formed when white light is passed through a prism.”
“We like to run our training programs, by bringing in ideas from many sources to a central point, and then returning the learnings back to the workplace where they can be used to improve the business and add value.”
Cobbledick says, "With print training staff across Australia, Spectra Training has proactively started to address gaps in training for the printing industry".
He says, “There has been good support both from printing and packaging companies. Companies and associations such as Apprenticeships Melbourne, have been very proactive in supporting the move to high quality workplace based apprenticeships. Apprentices now learn from industry trained professionals and are supervised by mentors from their own company on their own equipment. Spectra Training has a clearly articulated strategy to become a leading provider of print training in Australia, and has worked proactively with RMIT and industry partners towards this objective.”
“The print and packaging industry are experiencing many of the same challenges as other manufacturing companies in Australia. High costs, caused somewhat by the high Australian dollar, means companies will need to embrace change and adapt if they are to survive. Our goal is to make our clients more profitable by helping them to work more efficiently. We believe that productivity gains can be achieved in this industry by adopting lean principles and working smarter. We believe there is a strong future for the Australian printing and packaging industry and that is why we have invested so heavily in recruiting a world class group of pre-press, printing and print finishing trainers and assessors.”
