Chaucer Press Christchurch has obtained an Enviro-Mark Bronze certification, administered in New Zealand by Crown entity Landcare Research, and popular overseas among European multi-nationals The certification is an internet-based programme which starts at the lower ìbronzeî level and works up three further levels. It was awarded to the company by Christchurch mayor, Gary Moore, and represents Chaucerís commitment to health, safety and environmental issues.
Chaucer has added the certification to its ISO 9001 Quality Assurance system.
Chaucerís technical manager, Mike Dawson says the bronze level assures the company of compliance to all the health, safety and environmental regulations.
It has additional benefits such as the ability to get discounts on all ACC levies, possible preferred supplier status with major companies and improved risk management.
Dawson says the company found it difficult to be fully confident it was complying with all the legislation and local body requirements and didnít want to wait until something happened before finding out.
ìWe were looking for an externally audited system to add to the ISO 9001 but the ISO 14001 would have been an overkill for us. The Enviro-mark appealed to us because we could work away at it at our own speed with all the help and assistance at our fingertips.î
He says the company is planning to take its certification level to Gold in the near future, but will not be going any higher at this stage.
Chaucer Press is also one of several printers assisting Christchurch City Council with its Target Zero waste minimisation programme to help reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill. The council has financed an independent study into the waste produced by the printing industry in Christchurch and has helped source companies to take most of the waste from the industry including empty ink tins and plastic strapping.
