The decision to give wine labels their own special section in Pride In Print has paid off with the Ata Rangi Crimson label printed and entered by Rapid Labels of Auckland winning the overall Labels Category.

Not only that, but it underlined the strides that flexographic printing is making in a field that previously was the domain of offset.

Senior Labels judge Chris Mills said the label industry decided this year it would do something a little bit different by having its own category specifically for wine labels.

"It meant that there was an increased competition specifically in this field and this particular label just stood out. If you go through all of the judge's comments on the judging sheets, there was not one negative comment passed about this job.

"It was printed on a flexo press in five colours with an anti-scuff varnish, and it is very hard to fault this bit of work.

"The difference from previous years is that wine labels that have won this category before have been printed offset. But this has been done on flexo and I think it is a nice design and an excellent job."

The label won in category 7a 1 (self-adhesive reelfed wine labels) and was printed for Ata Rangi Wines on Kantac Mirrorkote stock provided by Dalton Fine Paper, using inks supplied by Mainland Printing Inks / Xsys Print Solutions.

It was printed on a Gallus EM280 press.
