AIP heads to NZ to run courses

The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) will be heading to New Zealand on April 11 to run the new Introduction to Flexible Packaging and Bioplastics half-day training course held in conjunction with PAC.NZ.

The course will be held at the BNZ Highbrook Partner Centre in Auckland and will be presented by AIP member and general manager of technical development Amcor Flexibles Asia Pacific – ANZ Richard Smith. 

The aim of the course is to provide attendee’s with an introduction to the following topics:

Polymers used in flexible packaging;

Flexible packaging manufacturing processes;

Films and their properties;

Market applications for flexible packaging – structures, properties and pack formats;

Emerging materials for flexible packaging;

Compostable and degradable flexible films;

Sustainable packaging – opportunities for flexible packaging

The course aims to give attendees an understanding of new emerging polymers and their potential application in flexible packaging. Finally attendees will gain a precise understanding of what are compostable and degradable films and how to consider packaging options in terms of what is responsible or sustainable packaging.

Smith is part of the executive team for Amcor Flexibles ANZ and is responsible for reviewing emerging technologies and working with Amcor’s customers on the development of innovative packaging solutions.

He also has the role of Sustainability Champion for Amcor Flexibles Asia Pacific group. In this role Richard works with Amcor’s customers to explore how to address their sustainability goals through responsible flexible packaging solutions.

Smith has worked with industry groups such as PACIA on degradable packaging and is a member of the Australian BioPlastics Association. In 2009 Richard became a member of the Standards Australia Committee, EV-017- Degradability of Plastics. This committee was responsible for the development of two Australian Standards, AS 5810 Biodegradable plastics - Biodegradable plastics suitable for home composting, and AS 4736 Biodegradable plastics – Biodegradable plastics suitable for composting and other microbial treatment.
