Design students recently had the opportunity to show off their innovative ideas to some Australia’s biggest FMCG manufacturers. This year’s Cormack Packaging Innovation Awards called for students to design a closure for the food or beverage market, with 20 finalists chosen from the 90 entries.UTS student Frag Woodall was the winner with a one-handed, simple action closure concept for energy drinks.
For his efforts, Woodall received $1000 cash and a three month work placement at Cormack’s head office in Sydney. Runners-up were Arthur Owen from UNSW and Adam Crick from UTS.
Aquiles Acevedo of Goodman Fielder, Lisa Roderick of Coca-Cola Australia and Ian Macnaught of Cormack Packaging were the judges and took into account manufacturing processes, environmental factors and consumer acceptability.
Acevedo says the competition is a good chance to explore young Australian talent in the specialist field of packaging.
“Design and creativity are aspects that we can see each day in every thing that we do, from the most simple thing to the most complex that originate from someone that decided to see life through a different perspective,” said Acevedo. “That is what exactly this competition has, new concepts and creativity of young minds.”
Representatives from other large Australian FMCG manufacturers included Noble Beverages, Orica, SC Johnson, Techpack and Unilever Australia.
