Both packaging professionals and up and coming design students were rewarded for their efforts in the industry at this year’s Australian Packaging Awards, held in Melbourne on October 6. The annual event attracted more entries than ever before, in categories covering everything from branding to labels, consumer acceptability, design and environmental awareness.

The Packaging Council of Australia president Jim Snelson says the awards are a way of recognising the production of high quality packaging.

“In terms of design, innovation, technology, environmental aspects and production, I believe these awards again demonstrate that Australian packaging is competitive on an international basis,” says Snelson. “With globalisation and the proliferation of Free Trade Agreements, the pressure to produce high quality and cost competitive packaging is not going to go away. Indeed, it will intensify.”

Snelson believes that in its pursuit of excellence, the Australian packaging industry is playing an important role in promoting quality products, providing employment, minimising environmental impacts and furthering Australia’s economic and social well-being.

“The quality and variety of entries received for the 2005 APA shows the Australian packaging and design industry to be in a healthy position. A diverse range of packaging was presented by entrants this year including; food & beverage, pharmaceutical, luxury items, agriculture, transport/storage, auto and household maintenance, to name a few,” he says.

Best of Show this year went to the Le Mac Australia Group for its assorted polyglaze packs for Selleys Australia. This award is selected from the gold winning entries and recognises the winning entry, which best represents the award in which it has been successful.

Judges described Le Mac’s entry as an outstanding example of excellence in packaging design and said the range creates an undeniably powerful brand impact. The judges were greatly impressed by the improvement evident in this design. The advance within its own product category is considerable, the upgrade in brand image remarkable.

Judges commended Le Mac on the use of shrink sleeve technology and the maintenance of the integrity of the design during image distortion and shrinking over the various pack shapes and irregularities of shape.

They also said consumer appeal was very high, and product usage and acceptability was vastly improved through the packaging. “The range is at once unified as a family, and yet individually highly legible. The brand is set comfortably above its competitors, able to command a premium price point, and enjoy increased brand perception,” said the judges.

Le Mac also won gold in the brand award and the consumer acceptability award, and silver in the technical innovation and superior label awards. Other multiple award winners included the Barossa Olive Oil Company, Foster’s, Spark Studio, EKH Branding House, Designworks Enterprise IG and Catalyst Design Group.

The awards night also featured the Southern Cross Design Awards for students, which celebrated its 20th year. Snelson says these awards have a proud record of promoting the talent of tertiary students who are studying graphic or industrial design across Australia.

“The winning entries exhibited a very high level of creativity, as well as an increased technical understanding,” says Snelson.
Best of Show went to Belinda Stewart from the Faculty of Design at Swinburne University of Technology, Victoria for her ‘Sinffadog’ entry. Judges described her drink spiking detector kit as “researched, functional and attractive”. Storage, stackability, transport, usability and retail display were all complimented by a modern shape and sleek graphics, said the judges.

This year 30 institutions participated in the Southern Cross Design Awards, with over 500 students registering, 400 of them submitting an entry. Successful exhibitions, providing students, lecturers, the packaging and design industries and the wider community to view the entries, were held in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney.
