CMC Machinery shows off bespoke boxer

CMC Machinery’s CartonWrap packaging machine, aimed at the ecommerce fulfilment market – shown at Post Expo in Brussels in September last year – has been launched onto the market at a major factory event in Italy.

The Cartonwrap is designed to manufacturer variable-sized cartons dynamically from a reel of corrugated cardboard, building the carton around the goods then labelling it for shipping. It has an average running speed of ten boxes per minute.

Bill Danyluk, managing director of MailPack – CMC’s agent in Australia and New Zealand, says, “Because the machine uses wrapping technology to construct each carton around the relevant product, it minimises the size of the carton, cuts out the use of padding materials to fill the empty space in a standard carton and negates the transport of empty space.

“MailPack has presented some pre-launch information to selected companies locally who have all expressed interest in the concept. The recent event at the company’s factory was the first time the CartonWrap has been shown live.”

A size detector in the product inlet registers the size of each product and sends that data to the box-forming section to define the carton size. Multiple products can be placed in the same box.

The automated box forming section also features a creasing and cutting system, transversal cutting blade and hotmelt glue guns that automatically apply glue to the blank.

The products and half-formed cartons meet in the box-filling section, where the machine carries out product alignment and carton filling operations before the upper flaps on the box are closed for a finished job.

Packagers also have the opportunity to add documents such as marketing materials, invoices and return instructions through optional feeders on the machine outlet.

The CartonWrap takes reels of 800mm and 1,200mm wide, with other sizes available on request. It can form several box sizes. From an 800mm reel it can assemble cartons of 240x150x30mm up to 450x350x80mm or 350x350x150mm. Or from a 1,200mm reel, 300x150x30mm or 240x150x200mm up to 600x350x200mm.
