Singapore increases 3D print research capability

Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University, NTU, has given a boost to 3D print with the announcement that it will establish a $30m research facility.

Supported by Singapore’s Economic Development Board, the research centre will have the latest 3D printing machines, such as laser-aided machines for building metal parts and objects for industry, and bio-printers which are able to print human tissues.

The 300sqm centre, will work closely with the manufacturing industry on R&D projects to develop new materials, software and processes leading to commercial applications.

Researchers say 3D printing offers a capability to create 3D products from computer-aided design models by adding materials in a layer-by-layer fashion, in a similar fashion to the way printers place ink on paper. They see this process as advantageous over manufacturing that involves machining, casting and moulding. The 3D printing process handles complex designs and changes easily without incurring additional costs.

They add that the research centre will also help address a trend for growth of 3D printing major industries, such as aerospace, automotive, oil and gas, electronic and bioengineering. Possible applications include organ and tissue printing, food printing and hybrid manufacturing.
