A popular Japanese tourist web site has reversed the trend for magazines going on line by publishing the first hard copy print edition of its magazine.
Time Out Tokyo magazine, geared to tourists and expats, is distributed free of charge at 300 locations, primarily airports, train stations and hotels. It showcases Tokyo with a theme ’50 Reasons Tokyo is the Greatest City in the World, featuring comments about the great city from Naoki Inose, the metropolitan governor, and from Yuki Ota, the athlete who won a silver medal in fencing at the London Olympics.
The first issue will also include a story about the ongoing photographic art project ‘They Shoot Tokyo’, featuring 100 Japanese and foreign photographers. Its special feature article will introduce readers to specific expressions of Tokyo as seen through the eyes of 25 of these photographers.
Publishers say the magazine will also offer high quality, detailed, up-to-date information from local experts intimately familiar with the city. They plan to print four issues per year.
Distribution points for the 100,000 copies include aiports, Narita and Heneda; train stations, Tochomae, Shinjuku, Asakusa, Ginza, Roppongi Station etc; hotels, Conrad, Mandarin International etc
