He tells Australian Printer, “I have had a wonderful career with the association; I was 23 when I started. I have now decided to move on to unknown things, something completely different. I suspect the closest I will come to the printing industry will be reading the daily newspapers.

“I think the printing industry has a wonderful future ahead of it. It is challenging times, there is a lot of uncertainty out there as the industry goes through a period of transformation. But I think what will emerge will be a viable, sustainable industry, and companies that are prepared to move their businesses with the changing needs of society in terms of multichannel communication will do well.”

McLary began his employment in April 1980 as an industrial officer and progressed to Queensland regional manager, general manager of research and development and finally Queensland state manager and project manager.

Bill Healey, CEO of the PIAA, says McLary exemplifies a steadfast commitment to the association and its members and the well-being of the printing industry.

Healey says, “Throughout his career Neal has witnessed some of the most interesting and challenging times that the industry and association have confronted, ranging from the industrial turmoil of the hours campaigns in the early eighties to the boom times for the industry in the early-nineties.

“Neal tells me he is looking forward to embracing new and as yet unidentified challenges and I’m sure members will join me and the board in wishing him all the best in his retirement.”

Healey adds that Robert Hall-Boman, advisor for workplace relations with the Queensland PIAA office, will take over the state manager role during the transition period and will work closely with McLary over the next few months before his departure.
