TAFE’s Sydney Institute rewarded its graphic arts students at an awards ceremony on Wednesday, with third year graphic prepress student Michael Shankster taking out several top awards. As well as the Australian Printer Magazine Award for outstanding achievement, Shankster also won the Creo Award for Student of the Year and the Bob Anderson – Macarthur Press Memorial Prize for outstanding merit in graphic arts. Hailing from the Snowy Mountains town of Jindabyne, he also finished in the top five at the Graphic Arts International World Skills competition in Helsinki. Teachers described Shankster as a focused student who is “among the world’s most skilled and talented young tradespeople”.

Australian Printer Magazine Awards also went to four other students for excellence in their respective fields. In his final year, Canberra printing company, Pirion, employee Bradley Johnson was the recipient of the print finishing award. Teachers said he “showed consistent initiative and applied himself to the best of his ability”.

Graphic prepress student Cohan Banfield won the award for this category. His teachers say he demonstrates “a willingness to learn and be part of the new and emerging technologies that are so prevalent in our prepress industry today.”

Currently working at ACE Print and Display, Daniel Bonfiglio was recipient of the printing machining award. He is currently working on a MAN Roland 800 printing posters, 1600mm by 1100mm sheet size.

Mature age student Arnold Remiendo won the award for screen printing. His teacher said that Remiendo, who works at Sony Music, “is eager to learn and is always striving to achieve.”

Along with the Australian Printer Magazine Awards, 78 other awards were given out on the night to recognise the achievement of students who excelled in their given trade areas.
